Smelling the Fragrance

Tea appreciation involves a critical step known as "smelling the fragrance." How can you discern the quality of a tea through its aroma? Typically, it's done in three stages: hot sniffing, warm sniffing, and cold sniffing.

Hot Sniffing

After warming the cup, add dry tea leaves to release the tea fragrance and detect any peculiar or miscellaneous odors it emits.

Warm Sniffing

After brewing 1-2 times, smell the teaware or the bottom of the leaves to gauge the intensity and duration of its aroma.

Cold Sniffing

Smell the bottom of the leaves to assess their persistence.
The quality of a good tea is often evident in its aroma, and you can tell the difference when you smell it from different aspects.
